OUR COVEN

Learning and Growing Through Service to the Gods and Our Community

Two Rivers Coven
is an
egalitarian,
non-hierarchical,
eclectic circle
whose members practice
varying forms of Paganism.

We revere both God and Goddess in their many guises.

We seek to align ourselves to the cycles of the sun, moon, and the divine in action and worship.

We hold that service is love made manifest,
and believe in service
to our coven,
to our community,
and to our deities.

Like the rivers for which we are named,
we are committed
to flowing
with the rhythms and seasons of nature.

OUR COVEN NAME

Two Rivers Coven is named for the two mighty rivers that have shaped the face and history

of Kansas City and her environs: The Kansas and Missouri Rivers.

The Kansas River flows 150 miles from its headwaters near Fort Riley, Kansas:
the confluence of the Smoky Hill and Republican River.

The Missouri River flows over 2,000 miles from its headwaters in Three Forks, Montana:

the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallitin Rivers.

Along the way to their eventual meeting at Kaw Point near Kansas City, these rivers
leave their mark on different geographies, and the people that live in them.
The rivers are a source of water for both people and agriculture, provide power through hydroelectic dams,
and serve as a place of beauty and sanctuary for humans and animals alike.

While dams and dredging have altered the course of the rivers so they seem to serve humans
and their interests, the rivers are not tame. Their flooding serves to remind us of the wildness of nature,
the unpredictability of the divine, the quest to live in harmony, and the realization that
knowledge is fluid and ever-changing.

OUR GOALS AS A COVEN

Two Rivers Coven seeks to foster mastery of the self, service to the divine and our greater community, and a sense of reverence for the sacred present in our world around us by:

Observing, imitating and holding sacred the universe around us,
Acknowledging the divine in ourselves and all living things,
Serving the needs of other anonymously and selflessly,
Extending fellowship without expectation of financial gain,
Creating and enacting rites of worship,
Mastering the words we use to describe ourselves,
Being accountable for all aspects of our lives,
Developing self-acceptance to remove the need for validation, and
Knowing, ruling, loving, and trusting our selves.

Wicca for Beginners
Thea Sabin
ISBN: 978-0738707518

Embracing both the spiritual and the practical, Wicca for Beginners is a primer on the philosophies, culture, and beliefs behind the religion, without losing the mystery that draws many students to want to learn. Detailing practices such as grounding, raising energy, visualization, and meditation, this book offers exercises for core techniques before launching into more complicated rituals and spellwork.

Paganism: An Introduction to Earth-Centered Religions
Joyce and River Higginbotham
ISBN: 978-0738702223
This book presents the basic fundamentals of Paganism. It explores what Pagans are like; how the Pagan sacred year is arranged; what Pagans do in ritual; what magick is; and what Pagans believe about God, worship, human nature, and ethics. Based on a course in Paganism that the authors have taught for more than a decade, it is full of exercises, meditations, and discussion questions for group or individual study.

The Magick Toolbox
Carl Neal
ISBN: 978-1578633241
A guide to over 20 categories of magickal tools that Wiccans and pagans use for magick and ritual. Neal also helps readers first understand how they plan to use each tool. Understanding a tool's use helps to determine what kind of material is best suited for the intended task, where to find the tool or how to make it, and, finally, how to use it and care for it. The Magick Toolbox offers lessons on how to consecrate and care for magickal tools, rituals for the tools themselves, and uses for the tools in incantations, prayers, and magickal workings.

OUR GENERAL BELIEFS

At the Spring Witchmeet of 1974 held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Council of American Witches adopted a document entitled 'Principles of Wiccan Belief' in an effort to inform, educate, and define for the general public, as well as new Craft practitioners, the central belief system of Wicca (Witchcraft). This document represents an overview of Craft law and theology, but does not contain the many nuances of the religious structure that most Witches may follow. As with any religious belief that has had time to grow and change, no single set of thirteen statements could completely define the faith. The Principles of Wiccan Belief serve well as a simplified explanation of the system. Even though the Council of American Witches disbanded later the same year, these principles have been incorporated into one or more editions of the U.S. Army handbook for chaplains, and they serve as a description of the general beliefs of Two Rivers Coven.

Introduction:
In seeking to be inclusive, we do not wish to open ourselves to the destruction of our group by those on self-serving power trips, or to philosophies and practices contradictory to those principles. In seeking to exclude those whose ways are contradictory to ours, we do not want to deny participation with us to any who are sincerely interested in our knowledge and beliefs, regardless of race, color, sex, age, national or cultural origins or sexual preference.

Principle One:
We practice rites to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm of life forces marked by the phases of the Moon and the seasonal Quarters and Cross Quarters.

Principle Two:
We recognize that our intelligence gives us a unique responsibility toward our environment. We seek to live in harmony with Nature, in ecological balance offering fulfillment to life and consciousness within an evolutionary concept.

Principle Three:
We acknowledge a depth of power far greater than that apparent to the average person. Because it is far greater than ordinary it is sometimes called "supernatural", but we see it as lying within that which is naturally potential to all.

Principle Four:
We conceive of the Creative Power in the universe as manifesting through polarity-as masculine and feminine-and that this same Creative Power lies in all people, and functions through the interaction of the masculine and feminine. We value neither (gender) above the other, knowing each to be supportive to the other.

Principle Five:
We recognize both outer worlds and inner, of psychological, worlds sometimes known as the Spiritual World, the Collective Unconscious, Inner Planes, etc.-and we see in the inter-action of these two dimensions the basis for paranormal phenomena and magickal exercises. We neglect neither dimension for the other, seeing both as necessary for our fulfillment.

Principle Six:
We do not recognize any authoritarian hierarchy, but do honor those who teach, respect those who share their greater knowledge and wisdom, and acknowledge those who have courageously given of themselves in leadership.

Principle Seven:
We see religion, magick and wisdom in living as being united in the way one views the world and lives within it-a world view and philosophy of life which we identify as Witchcraft-the Wiccan Way.

Principle Eight:
Calling oneself "Witch" does not make a Witch-but neither does heredity itself, nor the collecting of titles, degrees and initiations. A Witch seeks to control the forces within her/himself that make life possible in order to live wisely and will without harm to other and in harmony with Nature.

Principle Nine:
We believe in the affirmation and fulfillment of life in a continuation of evolution and development of consciousness giving meaning to the Universe we know and our personal role within it.

Principle Ten:
Our only animosity towards Christianity, or toward any other religion or philosophy of life, is to the extent that its institutions have claimed to be "the only way" and have sought to deny freedom to others and to suppress other ways of religious practice and belief.

Principle Eleven:
As American Witches, we are not threatened by debates on the history of the Craft, the origins of various terms, the legitimacy of various aspects of different traditions. We are concerned with our present and our future.

Principle Twelve:
We do not accept the concept of absolute evil, nor do we worship any entity known as "Satan" or "the Devil", as defined by Christian tradition. We do not seek power through the suffering of others, nor accept that personal benefit can be derived only by denial to another.

Principle Thirteen:
We believe that we should seek within Nature that which is contributory to our health and well-being.

DO YOU HAVE PUBLIC RITUALS?

The short answer: No.

The long answer: Two Rivers Coven seeks to build a coven based on intimate bonds of trust between its members, privacy in worship, non-hierarchy, a balance of female and male energy, constant creativity, personal growth, and healthy responsible honest living.

These are incredibly lofty - yet achievable - goals. As such, the attainment of such goals is not a fast or easy process, and in order for our coven to run smoothly, time to grow as coven out of the public eye is needed.

At this time, while our coven is still forming, we choose to only host rituals by invitation. However, there are several groups in the Kansas City area that hold open rituals at which seekers and other interested parties are welcome to attend.

The short answer: No.

The long answer: While there is validity in being paid for services rendered, Two Rivers Coven follows the tradition that money should not be exchanged for teaching foundations of our belief.

This is not to say that the exchange of money for services is frowned upon: classes offered in herbalism, tarot, astrology, etc. are often offered with the expectation of a course charge.

However, as a coven, we are a family, and we help one another out in preparing for rituals and extending fellowship. Whether this is contributing time, contributing ritual supplies, bringing a dish to pass or some tea to share, we promote the idea of greater service and contributing to a greater good, rather than personal enrichment for our teaching.

DO YOU CHARGE MONEY FOR CLASSES OR TEA & CHAT?

I'M ALREADY A 3RD DEGREE IN XYZ TRADITION, CAN I JUMP IN AND LEAD?

The short answer: No.

The long answer: While Two Rivers Coven respects elders of the Craft and values the experiences that they have during their walk on their path of belief, we are founding a new coven which will be sharing common beliefs and practices. As a coven, we value an egalitarian and non-hierarchical structure with shared leadership.

To that end, all members are equals, and all members start with the same curriculum, regardless of years of service in the Craft. Experienced members add to the richness of our teachings with their own experiences, and seekers can bring freshness and new perspectives to our foundation teachings.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING FOR ME. CAN I JOIN?

The short answer: Yes

The long answer: Since we are forming, we are open to meeting new members at this time. Two Rivers Coven will be hosting informal tea-and-chats in local coffee shops, tradition sharing chats, guided meditations, informal classes on various topics, and rituals by invite.

If you are interested in joining us, please send an email to the Scribe. Tell us a little about yourself, your path thus far, your religious background, and why you are interested in Two Rivers Coven.

We accept those with varying levels of experience - from seekers to experienced practitioners - who are committed to our goals and our coven vision.

This section will be updated as further questions arise.
